Which serum to choose?
The search for a variety of natural and synthetic ingredients to create the most effective cosmetics goes deep into the history of mankind. The modern pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry has of course had an influence on cosmetic progress, but the focus on substances offered by nature or on processes inherent in nature, such as plant extracts or fermentation, is no exception.
One of these substances is the one that has been frequently mentioned in the last few years, hyaluronic acid. It is not an artificial substance, but a substance that is inherent to our bodies. It is therefore a completely safe and generally well tolerated ingredient.
Hyaluronic acid (or hyaluronic acid - HA) forms the basic structure of the skin with collagen and elastin fibres. It is thanks to this substance that keeps collagen and elastin connected in our skin, and it is also excellent at binding water molecules that it holds between cells. It is therefore an essential ingredient for hydration. It can hold a lot of water - a thousand times more than its weight.
Hyaluronan's ability to bind water is used specifically in cosmetics - simply put, hyaluronic acid molecules serve to carry active ingredients into the skin and make them easier to absorb. Other cosmetic uses include mobilising the skin to produce its own hyaluronic acid, slowing the breakdown of collagen fibres and antioxidant activity. It has emollient, regenerative effects and stimulates the formation of new skin cells. Which equals hydration and elasticity. The skin is smoother and more youthful. Replenishing it is essential as we age, because the natural production of hyaluronic acid decreases and the body produces up to half as much after the age of 40.
On your own skin
There are two serums with active hyaluronic acid available in our range. Why did we choose this particular serum? It contains a more concentrated formula of the active ingredient and is used before applying the cream. The serums are lightweight, well absorbed and really only a few drops are ever enough. Incorporating hyaluronic serums into your daily skincare routine is a good move, especially after 30, and will have a beneficial effect in slowing down the aging process of skin that loses HA with age.
The ratio of high to low molecular weight hyaluronic acid is also important. SMYSSLY serums contain an optimal concentration of low- and medium-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid molecules. The larger serum molecules trap moisture from the surrounding environment and create a barrier to prevent transdermal water loss and skin dryness. The low molecular weight hyaluronic acid then penetrates deeper layers of the skin, leaving it firmer, fresher and visibly brighter in the long term.
